● Monday (4/14) is BN church cleaning starts at 6pm . If you are able to bring a vacuum and/or a step ladder it would be appreciated.

● Testimonies/ baptisms: We are looking forward to testimonies and baptisms the weekend of May 3 ^rd and 4 ^th . The converts are Elly Bertsch (Ryan/ Jessica), Maxton Rauch (Jadon/ Tundy), Addison Frauhiger (Jeremy/ Sally) and Ridge Stoller (Andy/ Jenna). Let’s lift them up in prayer and encourage them.

● Thank You - We want to thank you for the surprise cards and gifts sent to Cindy for her birthday while she was in the hospital for surgery and continued recuperation at home. Thanks also to those who have been bringing meals. We appreciate continued prayers for Cindy's healing. We are also asking for prayers for the results of Stan's PET scan as we see the oncologist on Monday, April 14th, for his interpretation and recommended treatment plan. We thank you so much for all of the prayers, love, provision, and support. It has helped tremendously to lighten our loads. ● Valparaiso hymn sing - All are invited to attend a hymn sing and ice cream social hosted by the Valparaiso church Saturday, May 3rd. ● Today is the last Sunday to sign up for the Easter Sunrise Service. The service will be at the Fellowship Hall and will include special music, an Easter message, and breakfast. Dress will be casual. Music will begin at 7:00 AM with the message starting promptly at 7:15. Plan to arrive early. The service and breakfast will conclude in time for families to return home and get changed for morning church. Two lists are posted on the bulletin board - an attendance list and a food list. If you plan to attend, please put your name on the attendance list. Additionally, if you plan to bring food, put your name on the food list also. If it is not convenient to help with food, there will be a donation box that morning. Feel free to invite guests from the community, but we would like to know in advance approximately how many are coming. You may still sign up this week by notifying Lyle & Connie Kaehr, Courtney & Jodi Pfister, or John & Pam Reinhard.

● All are welcome to enjoy the annual Easter caroling at 7 p.m. this Wednesday at Bluffton North. If you want to sing in the general choir, please arrive by 6:30 p.m. Otherwise, please come by 6:45 p.m. so we can start promptly at 7 p.m. Contact Chet Baumgartner with any questions.

● Christian Care is accepting candy donations for our annual Easter Egg Hunt ! The event will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Please drop off any donations at Door 1 or Door 12.

BN Testimonies/ baptism : Taylor and Hali Isch have met with the ministers and we are looking forward to testimonies Wednesday night (11/1) and baptism Sunday (11/05). Let’s encourage them as we look forward to this joyful event.

Hospital Lumiere Benefit Auction - Please mark your calendars. There will be an online auction from Thursday, November 2 at 4 p.m. through Saturday, November 4 at 4 p.m., and a live, in-person auction on Friday, November 10th in Gridley, IL at 7:00 p.m. with a meal starting at 4:30. The auction is still in need of items to be donated if you would like to contribute in that way. These items should be

CCRC needs 2 volunteers to deliver meals on Fridays . This person will pick up meals from CCRC at 11:00 and deliver the meals to our clients. This position will take about 45-60minutes. Meals for Foundations - Foundations has been blessed by so many who have supported this ministry in several ways. In the last year, volunteers have offered to provide the meal on Thursday evenings, and that has been greatly appreciated by all who attend. If anyone is interested in helping out in this way or has questions please contact John or Pam Reinhard. We have openings for meals in October, November and December. May God bless you for considering this.

Registration for the 2023 Apologetics Conference on Saturday, November 11 in Indianapolis is now open to all interested attendees. Registration is required and will close on November 1. The purpose of the conference is to raise awareness of what apologetics is, why it matters, and provide entryways

into major apologetic questions. This year's theme is: Does God Matter? While "Does God exist?" may be one of mankind’s most fundamental questions, our increasingly secular society seems to be asking a different question: "Does it even matter?" Join us at the 2023 Apologetics Conference as we discuss how to respond to atheism and apathy.

Greetings to our Bluffton North church family.

At the threshold of a new year we thought it wise to give some direction on our plan for Bluffton North services for the month of January. (Keep in mind we make plans based on what we currently know with the understanding plans may change as the situation warrants. Prov 16:9)

Beginning tomorrow, Sunday January 10 ^th , we are planning a change in the timing and process. The essence of the change includes the addition of a second service, Sunday School classes, a shortened break between services (water and granola bars available), and NO lunch. The specific times are as follows:

UPDATE FOR BLUFFTON NORTH SERVICES – January 10 ^th (and likely for the next 2 Sundays after the 10 ^th )

FIRST SERVICE: 9:30 a.m. Doors open / 9:45 a.m. Song Service / 10:00 a.m. Pulpit time / Sunday School for all grades and adult classes

15/20-minute break (water and granola bars available in foyer)

SECOND SERVICE: 11:15 a.m. Song Service / 11:30 Pulpit time / Dismiss at approximately 12:15 p.m.

We appreciate your ongoing patience and prayers as we attempt to be responsible in how we manage our coming together for worship. There is no lack of variety in our opinions and/or convictions, so it takes an extra amount of grace to respect and esteem others who may think differently than we do. These days we are getting some good lessons on how to apply Eph 4:1-3 … “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”.

BC and BN is offering another Holy Communion service at 1:00 on Saturday January 23rd at Bluffton North (doors open at 1:00, the service beginning at 1:15). We plan to take additional health precautions with distancing, individual serving containers, and asking that masks are worn during the service. We look forward to a time of remembering, thanking and worshiping our risen Lord.

GIFT CARD Shower for Jon & Amy (Fiechter) Gerst! In an unexpected turn of events (COVID being one of them), Jon and Amy Gerst will be closing their 8.5 year call to Ethiopia and relocating to Ft. Wayne, IN. This decision has brought peace and grief and they would appreciate prayers as they settle in. They remain full time workers for SIM USA with Jon as the Missional Business Advocate. New Year’s Eve Service - Thursday evening, December 31 ^st at Bluffton North. Doors open 7:00 pm with singing at 7:15 pm, and pulpit time @ 7:30pm.

Reminder for 2020 Church Maintenance Collection . If you have not contributed this year to the church maintenance collection, please have that in before the end of the year. It can be mailed to the church at PO Box 322 Bluffton, IN 46714 or placed in the Maintenance Fund boxes at church. The suggested amount is $550 per member. Christian Care Retirement Community’s Good Samaritan Charitable Fund annual collection is taking place during the month of December. This collection helps cover monthly expenses for residents who have exhausted their financial resources. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at: 720 E. Dustman Rd., Bluffton, IN 46714. Logansport Hospital Thank You- A representative from Logansport hospital came to pick up all the items from the Christmas gift lift the end of November. They collected 539 items to give to their residents and wanted to thank each and every one of you for your generosity and wish you a blessed Christmas!

For our 2021 Churchwide Bible Study, we plan to do a study on Philippians using a study guide book from ACC Publications. This could be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect as a Church body. Christmas gifts for Christian Care residents . The # 1 thing the residents would love is to see family, but since that is not possible at this time. Betty Lough (activity director) suggested a digital Bible that reads to the resident. The digital Bible is called Bible Wonder. Instead of you all ordering one, we thought we would order them so they are all alike. The cost is $25 and at this time there are 43 residents. Nativity Walk- This evening from 5:30-8:00pm at the Southern Wells Community Church everyone is invited to their Live Nativity Walk. It will be at their new location at 9450 S 300 W Poneto.

Monthly Monday night prayer time will be tomorrow, Monday, December 7th. Quiet time/personal prayers from 7-7:30 pm and group prayer 7:30-8:15pm; all in the SS assembly. For those vulnerable or not feeling well are encouraged to pray at home. Masks are recommended as you move within the building.

SOS - There will be no SOS this Wednesday evening. With the uncertainty of Covid, we will let you know when we plan to gather again! The SOS committee

Brother Phil Moser's visitation on Tuesday will be private for the family only. The funeral will be on Wednesday at 10:30 at the Country Church. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral, however anyone is invited to attend the funeral service. As you arrive, you will be ushered into the assembly and seated. After the funeral, the family will be dismissed for a private graveside service. Anyone wishing to hear that service, can remain seated in the assembly room. Ushers will dismiss anyone else that does not wish to stay.

Silver Lining Collection will be open through November. Subscriptions are $18 and can be put in the collection box marked silver lining. If you are wanting to cancel your subscription, please let Irene Frauhiger know. Thanks

Thank You – We are awestruck by our church family. The amount people that participated in the “Airplane” drive through, and the donations we are receiving is overwhelming. We are truly blessed to have Jesus as our shining beacon through our struggles and successes in this life. I am 4 weeks into my radiation and chemotherapy treatment and have another 2 weeks to go. For the most part, I am doing relatively well, but my strength comes and goes quickly. I constantly trust God every day for his wisdom and understanding in my life. Please continue to pray for God’s will to be done in my life “Because I stand on the Solid Rock”. I love you all and God bless you. Toby and Jayla.

Maliyali Update - The Mueller’s have sent a video update on the progression of literacy teaching in Maliyali. They are thankful for your continued prayers as the teaching is going very well, and the Maliyali people are excited to be learning to read and write in their heart language for the first time in their history! Thank You - Eric and Marcia Steffen would like to sincerely thank you for your prayers, encouragement, cards and loving gifts during Eric’s recent cancer surgery. God has been good to us and Eric is home recuperating after a week in the hospital. We are grateful for each of you, our church family of faithful prayer warriors. We love you all!

Choose a half-hour time segment and polling location listed in the editable Google Docs links below and sign your name to fill the slot. The spots cover three Wells County and one Adams County poll, but feel free to pray at a different poll if it is closer to you. The thought would be to spend your time slot in committed prayer in your vehicle or walking around outside at the poll if you prefer. The times cover the open hours of the polls(6AM-6PM). OPTIONAL ways of showing our support is to decorate your car, write a sign ( displaying it on the passenger side), write a favorite a song, Bible verse, or encouragement on a paper airplane and fly it out to them. Thank You from Eric and Marcia Steffen for your prayers in the past, as they have been instrumental in giving us tremendous peace through Eric’s cancer journey. Continued prayers would be greatly appreciated for Eric as he undergoes surgery on Wednesday morning. God has been faithful through this entire cancer treatment and we have no doubt he will continue to be with us. Continued prayers. As many of you know, Toby came home last Thursday. He has been doing physical therapy and getting stronger every day. We have seen an oncologist for treatment and direction. Toby is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Test results will be sent out for further evaluation. We are unsure of when we will hear the results. We are truly amazed with how God is gently leading our steps. We are filled with so much peace and joy; we know that this is because we are covered in prayer. That you all for your prayers, cards and meals as it helps us to focus on healing. Please know that we will continue to update everyone with any news that pertains to our journey. We ask that questions be minimal. Many have questions that we don’t have the answers to yet. We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but today is a good day.

We will also be adding additional items to the snacks provided in an effort to gradually get back to a lunch type setting. The lunch will not be the traditional lunch, but rather a few more snack options along with bottled water and coffee. First service will conclude at 10:45am and the second service singing will start at 11:30am. The final prayer at the end of first service will include a prayer for the light lunch that will be provided. You may continue to stay in the sanctuary or exit to the dining room or foyer for your light lunch. Everything will be disposable, and you will be responsible for disposing your own trash in waste baskets provided. There will be someone at the tables to clean the table and another person to serve coffee. The food will be set up on tables outside the dining room similar to how the snacks have been provided in the past. You may eat wherever you feel most comfortable. Lunch this Sunday will include a donut, grapes, cheese stick, and a granola bar. This Sunday will serve as a trial for how we can continue to provide additional lunch items while staying safe during the pandemic.

HarvestCall Projects will begin our new season this Thursday, October 1st. We will meet each 1st & 3rd Thursday through March in the basement of the Fellowship Hall (use the lower doors). Thank you and update - It has been four weeks since Ken’s neck surgery. We are grieving his loss of mobility which in turn is his loss of independence. But through it all, God has been faithful to provide for us through family, friends, the medical community and all of God’s people Who have touched us with cards, prayers and encouragement!! Our HarvestCall collection is scheduled for this Sunday and next. HarvestCall is responsible for many ministries in the US, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Europe, Japan and several other countries where student education is sponsored. FAMILY PICNIC 2020 will be held today at KA from 5:00-7:30. This will be primarily an outside event with KA restrooms open for your convenience. Bring your own blanket or chairs for seating as well as your own picnic dinner and drinks to share only with your family. Pre-packaged ice cream desserts will be provided. In the past if you have provided a cornhole set for the picnic, please bring it! A variety of outdoor games will be available as well as the playset. Agenda for the evening is included as an attachment to the e-mail. Come enjoy an evening of fellowship with hopeful distancing in the beautiful outdoors.

Monthly Monday night prayer time will be tomorrow, September 14th . Quiet time/personal prayers from 7-7:30 pm and group prayer 7:30-8:15pm; all in the SS assembly. For those vulnerable or not feeling well are encouraged to pray at home. Masks are optional, depending on your comfort level. We will have someone at the door to let people in from 7 – 7:35. After 7:35 the doors will be locked and unattended.

Proverbs 31

As women, we are often intimidated by this chapter because it looks like a very tall order. But we need to consider that these words came from a woman, written to her son, King Lemuel. No doubt she had seen kings in the past fall into an addictive lifestyle of alcohol and womanizing pleasures. In vs 5 she cautions him of the interference this would have on his leadership.

Starting in vs 10 she’s telling him what to look for in a wife, one who is trustworthy and industrious (shops carefully). She is aware of her household needs and can see what work needs to be done. The fact that her children respect her (vs 28) says that she uses kindness and tactfulness in all her doings, (vs26). It appears that she balances all this productivity with having a heart for the poor (vs20) and a calmness concerning the future (vs25).

She cautions him not to be attracted to charm and beauty (as comes naturally to most men) but to look for a woman who fears the Lord (vs 30).

As men we often avoid this chapter either considering that it is for women or too fearful to discuss it with our wives lest we say the wrong thing and offend them. But, as stated before these are teachings from a mother to her son. Before verses 12-22 in verse 11 the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her. In our culture we are taught that trust is built not given, but here it comes first. Are we as men building confidence in our wives? Do we help them flourish in their God given gifts? In doing so we are not only trusting them, but also the Holy Spirit to work through them. Verse 23 states that her husband is known in the gates or respected. That respect is then transferred to her in the community. She is viewed as possessing strength and honor. Is our integrity worthy of respect in our community? Finally praise, verse 28, do we praise her in the right things or just when she makes us look good in the eyes of others? Correctly given praise will cause her to be fruitful in this earth and in Gods eyes.

Proverbs Chapter 3

Where do we go for comfort? What avenues do we take when we are faced with challenges? Are we allowing earthly fears to overwhelm us, causing us to waiver? Do we put our trust in monetary or material possessions that fade away? Where do we look for guidance? Who do we seek for council? Does our discernment come through our own understanding?

In God’s word we find answers to each of these questions. We are reminded that God’s word was given to us as doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness (2Tim 3:16). Through God’s word we are reminded to keep His commandments, to put them in our minds and write the words on our hearts (Jer 31:33, Prov 3:3). We can see in the Old Testament how those who kept His word prospered and had good success, and also how those who ignored it diminished. Proverbs 3:2 encourages us that if we keep God’s commandments, we should have length of days and long life. We will have peace added to our lives and mercy can be found there. We are instructed to approach the throne boldly, that we may obtain His mercy and find grace to help in times of need (Heb 4:16).

“Do not be wise in our own opinion’s” (vs. 7), reminds us that we need to recognize that God’s ways are above our ways and His thoughts are above our thoughts (Is 55: 8-9). Jesus taught us that the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Mt 26:41) and that the mind is continually evil (Gen 6:5, Jer 17:9), Who can know it? God alone can direct our paths, He will guide our steps (Prov 16:9), and through His word we can find direction. God never intended that man should walk alone or be independent of all that He has for us. Rather His desire for us is that we would be fully dependent on Him and daily look to Him for the strength to sustain us. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding, in all ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths (vs 5-6). Despite the occasional correction we receive from Him, we can know that it is all done for our benefit so that we might be purified. May we understand His guidance and see the benefit of allowing the Spirit to direct our hearts and minds though the word. For in this word is found wisdom above our understanding that can only be achieved through the implanted word in our hearts. When wisdom is found, it is better and more profitable than gold and silver and you will desire it above all. Pleasant are her ways and great are its days, she is a tree of Life to those who take hold of her and happy are all who retain her (vs13-18).

Hopefully this causes our minds to think upon Jesus; how He is our salvation, how we can find direction, truth and life in Him, how our lives should be found in Him who is the word, and lest we abide in Him can do nothing (Jn 15:5). His commandments are really just precious promises reassuring us that all He has spoken and all that He has done will never fail (Josh 21:45), and knowing that we are secure if we stand on these precious promises written within His word. Understanding that our trust in Jesus, gives us grace that helps us overcome any obstacle or giant that might stand in our path. Realizing all things are ordained by Him and that it is by the strength of His hand that we are even able to stand. May we put our trust and assurance in the very God of our salvation who can provide all things according to His will. May we meditate therein and reverence His holy name that our lives would be stayed on Jesus that we might be a reflection of His love.

Proverbs 1 – The Way of Wisdom.

Today, it is easy to find intelligent men and difficult to find wise men. Intelligence comes from spending time with the educators of this world. Wisdom comes from spending time with the Creator of this world. The Book of Proverbs is God inspired and full of wise counsel, but, that counsel is of little value if unheeded. In the 1st chapter of First Corinthians, the apostle Paul who determined to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified asked, “Where is the wise?” (vs. 20). While many intellects believe their intelligence will best get them through this life, it will never lead them to eternal life and frequently leads them away from God. He has “chosen the foolish things of his world to confound the (worldly) wise” (vs. 27). Intellectualism propels proud men to view God’s ways and wisdom as foolish and unworthy of pursuit (vs. 18). Though God’s storehouse of wisdom is never empty and freely available, only the righteous have right of entry into this house. Access may only be obtained through Jesus Christ who holds the keys that unlock the door to such treasure. He never dispenses his riches frivolously, yet He never withholds nor upbraids those who come seeking with humble and contrite hearts. God will, without a second thought, freely give us wisdom and never reproach or rebuke us for our request (Jas. 1:5). He is not only Provider but also Protector for those who choose to take the way of wisdom and the highway of holiness. While some in life choose to crawl in the filth of this world, God wants no such position for His children. He wants us to “walk uprightly” with alert minds and ready hearts. He promises a mighty shield to all whose heart will freely yield. Yea, He is the soul Defender to every righteous un-pretender.

Challenge : We dare not chance vulnerability in the fight against unrighteousness, and yet we often compromise the Lord’s protection by failing to walk uprightly in His wisdom. Determine, by God’s grace to risk no failure as you step into the fight today. Stay alert and stay behind the shield of faith in the Lord’s ability to keep you from the evil. God’s power, protection and wisdom is already secured for you. Enter each new morning and live each new day with a firm unwavering resolution that compromise is not an option! His grace is more than sufficient for every challenge. And, he is wise who dares avail himself of it fully.

Prayer : Father, impart unto me the wisdom laid up in store for this day. I know that without it I am defenseless, but with it, I am invincible as I pick up the shield of faith and head into battle. Grant me full humility that I may receive a full portion of grace and demonstrate the full power of Christ in my every endeavor. Lord Jesus be magnified through my full obedience today for the furthering of Your kingdom. Amen.

1 Kings 6

In verse 12 God tells Solomon that executing judgement and keeping his commandments is what will bring his blessings and prolong the covenant he made with David. From this we can understand that all the glorious detail and work and expense that went into the temple meant nothing if there wasn't a commitment to keeping God's word.

Today we would word it differently. Practicing religion and all of its facets may be beneficial to some degree but a true heart change is the true evidence of salvation. That heart change can only come with the grace of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God's covenant with us is that through faith in his son we can approach the very throne of God and be given salvation.

In Ephesians 2 we are told that by faith alone and not works, lest we should boast. Just as Solomon could build a magnificent temple but still found it difficult to live out God's word, we to can live moral lives and not really give ourselves over to God. If we seek God out through his word and follow obediently, he will be faithful in keeping his part of the covenant.

Even Paul in his letter to Titus stated “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us …” (v. 5). He then goes on to state “This is a faithful saying and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works …” (v. 8).

May we honor God today by reflecting His Son to a sick and dying world; letting our light so shine before men/women that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. (Mt 5:16)

Psalms 119

Psalm 119:129-176

Many times, in our lives we see contradictions between what we believe in our hearts and what we feel and experience in our own emotions. This can cause us to doubt at times wondering if we really believe what we say. Jeremiah records in 17:9 that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. The psalmist has written out for us in these 48 verses an example of this ongoing inner battle of the soul. Keep in mind this is David who has been declared to be a man after God’s own heart.

Let us start with show casing verse 165 “Great peace have they which love thy law and nothing shall offend them”. It would seem then that David would be in constant tranquility. I found in the following verses “I” statements, such as I forget not thy precepts, I love thy word, I hope in thy word.

In a host of other verses we can identify praise or adoration for God and his statutes.

If we tie all this interaction with and praise for Gods laws, statutes, judgments… to verse 165, it would seem that we would experience very little unrest in our lives. Yet in this same piece of scripture we read of David’s laments, grief, or oppressions.

In 4 verses he mentions crying 136,145,146,147 twice in 132 and 156 he asks for mercy and in 149,154, 156, and 159 he asks to be quickened or revived. Ultimately in the last verse of this iconic psalm David declares I have gone astray like a lost sheep and pleads for his savior to seek for him. So it seems that in this human experience that we call life we are forced to confront the battle between our soul and carnal nature. We come face to face with verses like Eccl. 7:20 “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not” and Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God”. But at the same time we cling to and put all our faith in scriptures like John 10:9 “I am the door, by me if any man enter in he shall be saved” and Romans 8:37 “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us”

It is no wonder that David found great peace in loving the word of God.

Psalms 119:1-48

Delight. What is our delight? Our delight is often measured by what we think about most. And, what we think about most is usually dictated by the thing(s) we value most. What we value most determines what we worship most. We tend to worship the source of our delight. So, one of the most telling indicators of our core values and who we are is linked to what brings us the most pleasure. The psalmist knew that delight in God’s Word, followed by humble Spirit-led obedience to the Word, would lead to a deeper love for the author of the Word. He recognized that growing in the knowledge and love of God was unattainable without spending significant time in the presence of God. Like the psalmist, we would do well to deliberately practice meditating upon God’s Word during our waking hours, both day and night. God wants to illuminate our hearts with His wisdom and truth so that we may remain unshaken by dark thoughts and deceptions leveled by the Enemy. The Father of Lies is no match for the Father of Lights (James 1:17).

Challenge : When you come to the Scriptures, do you come to taste or to feast? Do you come to “eat and run” or to linger long at the Lord’s Table? What is keeping you from earnest devotion and meditation on God’s Word? Can you willingly fall under the scrutiny of God’s all-seeing eyes and allow Him to search your heart and mind to uncover the least to the greatest inordinate affection? As He exposes your blemishes by the light of His Word, will you not cry out for a single heart that despises any ugly spot of flesh on your beautiful garment of righteousness, and instead take pure delight in Him? Determine to love sin less and love God more. And, as you dwell more on His Word, you will be troubled less by the world. The darkness of worry will fade, and the light of peace will increase. Nothing, but nothing will sway you from relentless faith as you face the Devil, a relentless foe. Never underestimate the great value of hiding God’s Word securely in your heart to call up at a moment’s notice as you encounter any and every challenge. “Because greater is He (the Word) that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

Prayer : Father, Giver of the law that led me to Christ, help me to delight most in the things that are treasured in heaven. Grant me proper perspective and keep me from the earthly distractions that threaten to take my eyes off what is eternally pleasurable. Help me to rehearse from the heart daily, the words of psalmist, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!” (Ps. 139:17). In the fray of the day help me default to meditation upon Your everlasting Word. I treasure Your Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit that enables me to keep Your Word. For Jesus’ sake, I pray it. Amen.

2 Samuel 24 - Beauty for Ashes

In Isaiah 61:3 God promises to give beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and the spirit of praise for heaviness. This story in the life of David gives us an example of just how God can do that. Relying on the strength of men rather than the power of God, David wants the people numbered. Once done, he realizes the sin he has committed and in verse 10 he confesses and asks God to remove the iniquity. Through the prophet Gad, he is given 3 choices. David chose wisely in that he placed himself in God’s hands as opposed to mans’ hands. He had just been told he had 800,000 valiant men from Israel and another 500,000 in Judah, but chose not to fight an enemy for 3 months. So many times, we are tempted to fix our sins and mistakes with our own supposed abilities. But that, however, is at the heart of the problem. We get ourselves in trouble, like David, relying on self and not God.

Having given himself and all of Israel into the hand of God, they suffer pestilence and death for 3 days; 70,000 are lost and death is at Jerusalem’s door. David pleads again to God asking for himself and his family to be afflicted instead of God’s people. When God stops the death angel and through Gad commands an altar be built, David would accept nothing free but pays the full price for Araunah’s threshing floor. We are often tempted to try to escape bad situations with as little cost as possible. It might be a financial problem or we might try to sugar coat a sin to get out of some embarrassment; but David’s example is to own up and pay in full.

This is where the beauty comes from the ashes. The purchased land becomes the site where Solomon builds the temple. The writer of 2 Chron. 3:1 refers to the same location as Mount Moriah implying that near this site is where Abraham started to offer up Isaac. So, this site of death, when God steps in, becomes a site of worship, not only for David and possibly Abraham but for generations of Israelites. From the time of Solomon’s dedication prayer till just before they were carried away by king Nebuchadnezzar, the Glory of the Lord lived there. We are all born in sin and are spiritually dead; but when God comes into our heart it is changed from a site of death to a holy place of worship where the Spirit of the most high God dwells.

Real repentance always includes a sorrow for and a turning from sin.

2 Samuel 12

What a poignant reminder of what should happen when the light of God’s Word shines

upon the darkness of our sin. The prophet Nathan effectively spoke God’s message to David

following his downward spiral into sin and left him with the full realization of sin’s seriousness

and the severity of its consequences. David’s conscience was fully awakened, his awareness of

sin heightened and his sorrow for sin deepened. We do not read that David rent his garments, but

it is abundantly clear that he rent his heart. That is where God wanted him and that is where He

wants us when our sins are exposed. Joel 2:13 reads, “And rend your heart, and not your

garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger,

and of great kindness, and repenteth Him of the evil.” God is not interested in outward

demonstrations of repentance if the inward man is not grieving over sin to the point of leaving

our transgressions behind and reaching forward to embrace His righteousness. Torn garments are

nothing; turned hearts are everything. Real repentance always involves real change, not just

sorrow for sin committed. Repentance, by definition, is a military term that implies a complete

about face. A 180-degree turn means we are no longer walking toward the sin, which provoked

our repentance. It is not merely pain for the sin, but, change from the sin. It means we will have

no regrets leaving the sin, only regrets for having committed the sin. Our eyes, ears, heads, and

bodies will turn from sin when our hearts turn away from sin. If we truly abandon our sin and

turn unto the Lord our God, the tenor of our daily pursuits will reflect our affections. When our

hearts are in persistent search of the things that please the Lord, He lavishes His grace, mercy,

patience, and great kindness upon us. And who dares live one day, or even one moment, without

these blessings of the Lord generously heaped upon us?

Challenge : So, what are you chasing? The things that grieve the Lord your God, or the things

that bless Him? Where is your heart today? You may believe that little harm will come from

trifling with sin, but make no mistake, the Lord looks at no sin in a small or insignificant way.

God knows how quickly “little” sins grow up to be “big” sins and the big and often deadly price

they exact upon us. God loves us all too much to wink at sin and its horrible effects. He didn’t

excuse sin in David’s life, and He cannot in ours. Though Christ’s love held Him there, sin

nailed Him to the cross. Your least sin was deadly to Jesus, and it will be deadly for you.

Prayer : Merciful Father, impose upon my heart the serious cost of sin. May I grieve over the

hurt even the smallest infraction will inflict upon my Savior. Help me to walk in the ways of

righteousness because of a growing love for this same Jesus who now sits at Thy right hand

making intercession for those He redeemed by the blood He shed. Through His name and

intercessory power, I pray. Amen.

2 Samuel 7

In this text, we see David at rest from warring with the Canaanites, and Israel is completely in control of the promised land. David proposes to build a temple for Yahweh, the God who has brought him and Israel to this point of peace. Yahweh tells David that he is not to build his temple, but lavishly responds by making a covenant with David and his descendants forever. In a way, Yahweh turns the tables and vows to build the house of David (family) rather than allowing David to build his house (temple). The chapter ends with a poetic prayer by David as he contemplates all Yahweh has done and will do.

2 Samuel 7 represents the resolution of two major narratives in the Hebrew scriptures. On a small scale this chapter represents the final chapter of a story that started when David was anointed by Samuel (see 1 Samuel 16). With many chapters in between, we see David has finally become an uncontested king and is even promised that his kingship will never fade. God says in verse 8, “I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.” On a grander scale, the current passage culminates the saga that began when God promised Abraham and his descendants that he would give them the land of the Canaanites (see Genesis 15 and Exodus 3). When David brings the ark of God to Jerusalem, it can finally be said that Israel controls the promised land. God says in verse 10, “I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.” Therefore, 2 Samuel 7 stands as a poetic ending to both the plot line of David and the kingship, and to the children of Israel and the promised land.

We can also see in this story the Biblical theme of Sabbath rest, and it is here that we can take some concrete application. We as humans can be quite legalistic, the most obvious form of legalism being our tendency to do things to earn salvation and favor from God. Still a more subtle form of legalism is shown when we try to do things to return the favor that we have already received from God. We feel that God has been so good to us that we ought to do things in order to pay him back in kind. This is the heart of David at the beginning of the chapter. Although it sounds reasonable to us, the God of Scripture actually takes offence to this notion of reciprocation. Stated simply, it is not the type of relationship that he needs or desires.

Yahweh did not go to battle with Pharaoh and the gods of Egypt in order to win for himself a nation of slaves. Likewise, Jesus did not ransom our lives on Calvary in order to gain our capacity to do religious works. Scripture indicates that the God of the Bible scandalously won us from slavery for the purpose of making himself famous in the heavens and within the sacred temples of our tiny hearts. He did it for His glory rather than as an investment in human capital.

The Biblical concept of Sabbath flies in the face of our tendency to earn success in our lives and favor from God by doing. The people of ancient Israel as well as Christ followers today are challenged to periodically take a Sabbath rest. We are to refrain from the doing of works and focus on being thankful and blessed. We are to follow David’s example and to refrain from doing something for God and enter into his presence to bask in the glory of all that he has done and will do. In verse 22 David says, “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.” As we read these words, may we from our most inward person say, ‘amen.’

It’s always a good time to talk to the Shepherd.

Psalm 23

The psalmist David found as Peter found that the Lord remains a faithful Shepherd who deeply loves His sheep. Day or night, we can take our cares to the Lord who extends His hand of provision (1 Peter 5:7). When we’re bound by burdens, He’s bound to care. Consider the words of the songwriter:

He was troubled by the day that he had just seen to a close,

Partly from things uncontrolled, and partly from the things he chose.

And, he knew this restless night required more than counting sheep,

Yet, he closed his tired eyes and tried to sleep.

But, if you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep, just talk to the Shepherd:

He hears your bleating heart, and He knows your grief.

And, He sees your every tear; and, His love will chase the fear

From your heart, and He will give you sweet relief.

She had so much left to do, “Oh, where had this day gotten to?”

Seemed like all the cares today were now tomorrow’s troubles too!

Yet, she knew that somewhere in the night there was a God who’d hold her tight:

“Maybe just a little talk with Him would make things right.”

We are oft’ times troubled too, by the things we suffer through,

But, remember Jesus, too, suffered and now He prays for you.

So, take your burdens to the One who cares so deeply for His sheep,

He who promised, both day and night, our souls to keep.

So, if you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep, just talk to the Shepherd:

He hears your bleating heart, and He knows your grief.

And, He sees your every tear; and, His love will chase the fear

From your heart, and He will give you sweet relief.

Prayer: Jesus, Tender Shepherd, I cast my cares upon You as the Caring One. Help me to turn all my daily cares into daily prayers and then trust Your tender mercies to see me faithfully through whatever threatens to press me down. I am thankful that whether sin, sorrow or suffering, burdens too heavy for anyone to bear, all can be rolled from my heart and laid at the cross of Calvary. I trust my greatest deficiency to Your greatest sufficiency and rest in the promise of Your care. For the glory of Your name, I petition You expectantly this day. Amen.

I Samuel 28

1 Samuel 28

In verses 1-3 we are given 3 facts that are a back drop to Saul’s current situation:

1. David appears to be on the enemy’s side

2. Samuel is dead

3. Saul at one time had put to death any who practiced all forms of witchcraft

David started out playing the harp to sooth Saul, had killed the Giant, Goliath, had married Saul’s daughter, built an enduring relationship with Saul’s son, and led his army into victory. Seemingly David should have been among Saul’s most trusted allies. Out of jealousy Saul had pushed him away and tried to kill him. So, David became the enemy. Bible scholars debate David’s intentions in being in a league with Achish. Some believing that Achish’s princes were correct in interpreting David’s true intentions (chapter 29). Regardless of David’s intentions, Saul had alienated himself from the man (David) God would use to destroy Israel’s real enemies, the Philistines.

Samuel was the prophet that anointed Saul king and continued to guide him throughout his life even when Saul was disobedient. Samuel was always there for Saul; however, we see Saul communicating to Samuel and not God. This is an easy trap to fall into; putting a man ahead of God. When that man/woman is removed from us, we are at a loss.

Saul at one time either in a genuine act of honoring God, or in a show of pious action (we are not given the details), abolished all those practicing any kind of witchcraft. In his past and still with him at this point was an attitude that his kingship held him above the law. This is a dangerous place to be.

Compiling all these mistakes together brings Saul into a lose/lose situation. Afraid of the enemy and not having David on his side he needs to turn to someone for help. All he knows to do is call out to Samuel. In verse 15 he tells Samuel that he tried to seek God by different means but God didn’t answer. None of these actions are recorded previous to him going to the witch, so it’s unsure if this is the truth or not. Ultimately, he went against his own judgment and sought out a witch. The lesson here is that we can be our own undoing when we don’t walk in accordance with Gods Word. Saul knew God had given the kingdom to David, but tried to prevent that. In doing so he was opposed to God. When opposed to God he had to rely on man. Samuel was a good man of God, but he wasn’t God. We can have really good men and women around us, as there is safety in a multitude of counselors, however they shouldn’t replace God. He must be our first and foremost refuge. When we find ourselves violating our own principles a red flag should be flying in our face. It is easy to justify actions at times especially when we are pressed, but standing strong at these times proves our faithfulness.

When persecution must yield to praise

Psalm 22 – When persecution must yield to praise.

Some think it strange that others reject them for their faith in the one true God. Some

speak of their love for Christ and then are offended when others falsely speak evil of them. It is

difficult at times to stand alone in the position of biblical truths among associates or

acquaintances. It is not uncommon among followers of Jesus to endure physical mistreatment

because of their association with Him. David experienced it. Jesus experienced it. And, so shall

we. Reproach, unjustified criticism, ridicule and/or persecution are not optional, but will be

experienced by all God-lovers. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer

persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12). Yet, such times are not times for avoiding but embracing God, for it

is in such times that He draws near. And the surest way to know His nearness is to offer prayer

and praise for His holy faithfulness. The psalmist testified to that when he proclaimed, “But

Thou art holy, O Thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel” (vs.3). This chapter is one of the most

poignant examples of the heights and depths God’s children can experience, but it is made

abundantly clear that God is where His praises are.

Challenge : Neither fear nor shrink back from the threat of persecution but wear it gladly as a

badge for righteous living. Do nothing to purposely provoke it, but, do not avoid it either. You

should live the gospel, and if the gospel offends and persecution follows, “Rejoice, and be

exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven” (Matt. 5:12). However, take warning to never

offend in word or deed, for there is no glory in personal offenses for those who bear the name of

Christ (Jas. 3:2). Evade at every cost mishandling the Word of Christ through your demeanor,

lest you bring upon yourself justifiable reproach and warranted persecution from the enemies of

Christ. It is not your persecution that makes you holy. It is the precious name of Jesus. Christian,

if you have chosen to make His name your own, then protect it with honorable godly living.

Allow each difficult time to remind you of the need to draw ever nearer to Christ. Difficulty can

only bring dread if you do not. If persecution is used as a prompt for praise, any prison bars of

hardship can be shaken to their foundation and the bonds of oppression broken. Remember what

Paul and Silas’ prayers and praise singing yielded while in prison (Acts 16:25-26)? God stands

ready to do the same for us.

Prayer : Father, help me bear any suffering gladly for the sake of Jesus Christ. Remind me often

of the unjustified persecution He endured so that I could by faith join His family, bear His name

and partake of untold blessings. I pray that I might bear the name Christian worthily in the face

of rejection, harassment or maltreatment. Give me the boldness I need to respond in love toward

a persecutor who needs to see Your love most through me. And give me a heart of prayer and

praising in both the best and worst of times. In the name of Jesus I ask it. Amen.

Keeping Your Heart

1 Samuel 18-19

“Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” Prov. 4:23

Chapter 19 gives us a snapshot in the long saga between Saul and David. It’s really a pretty sad

chapter in which Saul makes several attempts on David’s life and ends up in a humiliating

position. His first command to kill David is averted by Jonathan, Saul’s own son, the second

David’s agility and awareness help him escape, the third attempt Michal, Saul’s daughter and

David’s wife, helps David escape and finally the Spirit of God side tracks the messengers sent to

get David. Saul’s relentless pursuit of David puts him in a situation where the Spirit of God

causes him to prophesy, or praise him, before Samuel while naked and lying on the ground. This

would be humiliating for anyone, but even more so for a king. So how did Saul get here?

Looking back in chapter 18 we find some answers. Saul became angry and jealous, 18:8, over

David’s victories and in 18:9 he started to “eye” or become suspicious of David. Knowing that

God had departed from him and was with David he was fearful of David, 18:12. Out of these

emotions of fear, suspicion, jealousy, and anger Saul began to plot against him and with each

failure his fear grew even more, 18:29

David on the other hand, chose to react wisely. In 18:5 we see that David was obedient to Saul

and behaved wisely. 18:14 David behaves wisely and the Lord is with him, and again in 18:30

we read that he behaved more wisely than all of Saul’s servants.

Both men faced unpleasant circumstances. Saul Knew the kingdom was being taken from him

and David knew there was an ongoing attempt to take his life. We are often faced with

situations that we would rather not be in. They may not be of the magnitude of what Saul and

David faced, but still situations that have the potential to charge our emotions. In times like this

if we, like David, choose to react with wisdom rather than with emotion we will find ourselves

under God’s protection. We know from the whole story that David would not harm Saul even

when opportunity presented itself. His refusal to react was out of his respect for the fact that in

spite of Saul’s failures he was still anointed by God to be king. When we consider that everyone

is loved by God and Jesus died for each soul, whether they have taken advantage of his grace or

not, they are all precious in his sight. For us to allow our emotions to fester anger, jealousy,

suspicion, fear, or any other vengeful thoughts this could lead us down a similar path of Saul.

Jesus teaches things like “love your enemies” Matt. 5:44. Paul writes in Romans 12:21 “be not

overcome of evil but overcome evil with good “

Our perspective makes all the difference.

1 Samuel 17

Have you ever faced a challenge or threat that from man’s perspective seemed impossible to escape or conquer? Recount how you might have responded. With a high degree of determined confidence or dreaded consternation? Such was the choice Saul and the Israelite army faced when assaulted by the evil Philistine champion, Goliath. In their minds, to engage in battle with this warrior meant the sure likelihood of enslavement or death. The daunting probability paralyzed the entire army. Inaction became their daily rule. That is, until David walked on the scene. Still merely a man, and a young man at that, yet his perspective was strikingly different. His confidence was entirely in the LORD of hosts and that determined the choice he made. His assurance drove him into action that won the day. No giant or threat of any kind could keep him from moving forward in conquering faith, because David knew from experience who his Deliverer was. The more we experience God’s deliverance and keeping power, the deeper will grow our gratitude and love for our Great Deliverer. Sometimes He chooses to deliver us from our trouble and other times He chooses to deliver us in our trouble. Either way, He will bring us into a deeper relationship with Him. God is always working His plan to draw us closer to Him. His drawing card is often troubling thoughts, difficult relationships, or hard circumstances that drive us to seek His help and presence. He wants to establish our faith in His Word and will, never leave us to the folly of our willful ways. The futility and false security of human thinking and device are never more evident than when we are in real trouble and find these unable to deliver. Conversely, the truth of God’s Word, His promises, and His power are never more evident than when we are in the throes of difficulty. The righteous can take great comfort in God’s perfect and protective righteousness (Prov. 11:8). We choose our lot by association, whether with good or evil. The righteous will always ultimately be delivered from evil. The wicked have no such promise. It is always wisest to cast our lot with Christ, the righteous Deliverer.

Challenge : Remember who called you, why He called you, and where He is taking you. Trust Him to lead you on the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake (Ps. 23:3) and to complete the good work He has begun in you (Phil. 1:6). You know you are safely walking in God’s will if you are spending time knowing and trusting God’s Word and walking in His ways.

Prayer : Lord, give me enough joy during difficulty to keep me from the sloughs of despair; and, give me just enough sorrow in life to keep me from the subtleness of folly. Help me always to remember the promise that “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, Thou wilt revive me” (Ps. 138:7a). Deliver me from the Evil One and from my propensity to sin. I will rejoice in the promise and power of daily deliverance through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Judges 6 - God’s viewpoint

I Samuel 13 & 14

Chapters 13 and 14 in our Bibles form a single story, beginning with, “Saul was thirty years old when he became king in Israel…” and ending with, “All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines…” This story is written as a summary of Saul’s reign in Israel and as a portrait of his poor character. The author of the book of Samuel is simultaneously laying down the events in Israel’s history and highlighting faults in Saul's leadership.

The narrowest context for this story is in the rise of King David, one of the most important characters in Hebrew scripture. Here, the failures of Saul are presented as the reason God decides to raise up David to be king in Israel. While David was “a man after God’s own heart,” his predecessor Saul was a man who desperately invoked religion to serve his personal ends. We see Saul do this twice in the current text. First, Saul hastily institutes a sacrifice to prevent his troops from abandoning him (13:8-10). Then, he puts the entire army under a religious oath so that they won’t abandon the chase to collect plunder (14:24). In both of these actions we see Saul’s frantic preoccupation with whether the Israelites will follow him. He doesn’t see his kingship as a means to God’s great plan for Israel but rather sees the religion of Yahweh as a means to maintain his authority. In this way Saul is the exact opposite of “a man after God’s own heart,” and a profound contrast to King David.

The story also evokes a sad theme which is spread throughout scripture. Namely, the theme of humanity's tendency to take action outside of God’s plan and provision. Stories along this theme always result in awkwardness and often produce suffering. In chapter 13 we see Saul take matters into his own hands by instituting the sacrifice at Gilgal without Samuel. Notice the awkwardness between Samuel and Saul afterwards. Note also the personal anguish felt by Saul once the kingship is torn from his destiny. The story of King Saul and the sacrifice at Gilgal is one of many cautionary tales in the Bible warning Christians not to act on their own wisdom. See a short list of texts below.

Faith over Fear.

1 Samuel 10

While there are probably many, let’s glean and consider at least two lessons from today’s scripture reading. The first is the depiction of Saul being anointed by the holy prophet Samuel (vs. 1) and his subsequent heart transformation by the power of the Holy Spirit (vs. 6, 9). Then, God redirected Saul’s life. As New Testament believers, this sounds profoundly familiar. God has anointed us and empowered us with the Holy Spirit who is daily directing us and transforming us into the likeness of Christ to the fulfilling of God’s purposes through us. When God’s people allow Him to conduct the affairs of their life with confidence in His perfect leading, they will never have to fear misdirection. Those who accept His divine orchestration of daily events can step through life believing the Lord’s promised intention to bring good out of every present circumstance and a fruitful eternal conclusion. “And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: and I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear Me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me. Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and will plant them in this land assuredly with My whole heart and with My whole soul. For thus saith the LORD…so will I bring upon them all the good I have promised them” (Jer. 32:38-42). The second teaching we can draw out of this passage is Saul’s lack of faith when he hid from the purpose he was called to fulfill (vs. 22). He gave in to fear rather than faith. Knowing God’s will involves not only a head knowledge, but a heart trust as well. It is evidenced by ready obedience. This living faith and loving compliance will lead to wisdom, peace and a life of true blessedness. This is the life that all men may desire at heart, but most fail to seek, and even fewer find.

Challenge : Steadfastly trust the Lord’s involvement in every detail of your life for good. Reverence Him, love Him, follow Him, obey Him and rest with Him. Everything in this day will look infinitely brighter, more secure and blessed if you concede to Christ’s leading at every turn. He will not force you, but He waits for your yielding so that He may impart His amazing grace and bless you with an unparalleled life of fellowship and fruitfulness with Him.

Prayer : I concede, Father that I greatly need daily direction and grace to confidently and boldly walk in Your ways. I recount the words of Isaiah when he said, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD” (Isa. 55:8). Turn my trust entirely toward the surety of Your Word and a good outcome orchestrated by a Good Father. I willingly surrender my heart and will in obedience to Your Word. Through Christ I pray it. Amen.

The Tested Prophet

1 Samuel 3

“Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli” This quote taken from verse one illustrates that Samuel was already a committed servant of the Lord, but he had to pass some tests before he could be a prophet that the people respected.

1. His first test was did he hear the Lord and recognize him as the Lord. The first three times the Lord called him he heard but ran to Eli. Eli realized what was happening and had to give advice to him on how to respond. This apparently had a lasting effect, because we have no evidence that he ever again misunderstood when God spoke to him.

2. The second and probably the hardest test was to speak exactly what the Lord had spoken to him. Samuel feared to tell this bad news to Eli. Eli was his earthly master and he was still very young, but God needed a man who would hold allegiance to him over man. He told him everything, and held nothing from Eli.

3. Finally, the test of a true prophet is that what he speaks comes true. In verse 19 we read that God let none of his words fall to the ground. Literally meaning none of his words failed to come true.

Having passed the test all of Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord. (vs. 20)

We do not have the Lord come and speak to us in our bedrooms as Samuel did, but God has sent his Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to abide with us. He is the Spirit of Truth and he will teach us and remind us of what Jesus has said. (John 14:16-17,26) In John 17:17 Jesus prays that we will be sanctified by the truth and that Gods word is truth. Derived from these scriptures we have Gods word that is truth and we have the Holy Spirit within us which is truth, these two elements that we have continually with us provide us with what to speak to the world through our language and deeds. Providing we, like Samuel, do not shrink away from what God speaks into our lives, He will bless us as he did Samuel. We may or may not be as renowned as Samuel on the earth, but we will be renowned in heaven for having heard Gods call, and responding by living and speaking just as he has instructed us fearing not man but the God who calls us. (Prov 29:25)

Samson (an “unworthy” vessel of God)

Judges 16

Samson is the last of the judges recorded in this book and is depicted as the worst of the judges, morally. This is because the overall theme of Judges is to illustrate the failure of the Israelites to remove the Canaanites and their failure to worship only God. The disturbing ending of Judges “and everyone did what was right in his own eyes” has already been foreshadowed by Samson when he justifies his desire to disobey and marry a non-Israelite woman when he says to his parents “she is right in my eyes” * How fitting then is it that as Samson’s pursuit of doing what is right in his own eyes ultimately costs him his eyes.

Today’s chapter begins with yet another instance of Samson’s immoral behavior from which he escapes any immediate negative consequences, but as the chapter progresses, we get the detailed account of Samson’s love for sin catching up with him. Samson loves Delilah no doubt for her physical beauty, but he doesn’t give his heart to her initially. Delilah maybe loves Samson, but if she does, she loves wealth much more. He knows that she is treacherous, but he is unwilling leave her and lose the pleasure she gives. Samson is trying to bend reality and believe that he can ride the fence with his allegiance divided. Nothing so unstable can be perpetuated long, and soon Delilah’s begging for him to pull down his guard is so great that he caves and tells her his secret. By this time Samson is willfully blind to the fact that she will certainly use this to sell him out. She does. She takes the money and runs. Samson, in addition to his spiritual blindness is now physically blinded and enslaved. Just as sure as water will always run downhill, any encounter or seemingly harmless participation with sin will surely proceed to it consuming you entirely. There is no middle ground and there is no light dabbling with sin that you can come back from. To give a little allegiance to sin is to give it all. Our only hope to be saved is the saving blood of Jesus Who is sinless.

Samson’s greatest strength (physical strength) became his greatest weakness as he arrogantly felt invincible. Samson’s greatest weakness (lustful eyes) in the end became his strength. Without his physical eyes to be distracted by lust, he could finally see that God was the source of his strength to which he was never entitled but only graciously granted. Samson was a very flawed person that God used, in spite of his flaws, to fulfill promises that he had made to his people.

Challenge

• Believer, is the Spirit calling you into something that you have been resisting because you feel too flawed to be used by God? Take heart, God used someone as flawed as Samson. He can use you.

• Believer, is the Spirit calling you into something that you have been resisting because you feel like you have no special gifts or talents to offer and someone else would be better. Take heart, great gifts can, through pride, work against us. For the majority of the history of the world, God has worked primarily in the ordinary and with ordinary people.

• Unbeliever, are you trying to clean up your act so that you can be good enough to come to God? Don’t be deceived, no one can reverse the downward slope of sin. Jesus is the only hope for anyone to be saved from sin no matter how good they look on the outside

A real life and death struggle

Judges 14

Here begin the true-life details of one of Israel’s most well-known judges, Samson. Well-known

for his passion for exacting judgment upon the ruling Philistine enemies with his feats of

incredible physical strength, but also for his passion for foreign women and his incredible lack of

moral strength. Our great fascination with Samson’s miraculous power, is often overshadowed

by our disappointment with his weaknesses and failures. Truth be told, however, in some ways

his story may not be that different from our own. While we must never minimize the seriousness

of sin and always see its repulsiveness as God sees it, neither should we minimize the great

power God desires to work through us. The same Spirit of the LORD who came upon Samson to

carry out His mission has come upon us to judge (discern) and stand against the works of

darkness in our day. Though we may have experienced some failures, God does not want us to

dwell on the past. We can certainly choose to live as though our eyes of faith have been gouged

out and allow the Enemy to deceive us into believing that we are in bondage again to the chains

of sin. God knows better and wants us to believe better. He asks us to fix our eyes of faith upon

Christ’s powerful righteousness in us as we plot to foil the Enemy’s scoffing accusations and

bring down his haunted house of lies. There are few things we can really count on in this world.

But, one thing we can totally bank on; and, that is that no believer in Jesus Christ needs to live

under the stranglehold of sin. By God’s abundant grace and the gift of Christ’s righteousness, we

shall reign over sin in this life (Rom. 5:17). Without a doubt, we are dead to sin’s power and

equally alive to Christ’s power. Isaiah spoke of the deliverance Christ offers, “The Spirit of the

Lord GOD is upon Me; because the LORD hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the

meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the

opening of the prison to them that are bound” (Isa. 61:1). There is no sin or addiction greater

than our God-given power to conquer it and no greater joy than to know with certainty that Jesus

Christ has given us absolute power over sin’s allurement and devastation. Flirting with sin

cannot bring true happiness. Freedom from sin can. God knows the gravity of this real life and

death struggle and has provided His sovereign authority over Satan’s sinful impositions. We can

count on it unreservedly.

Challenge : Jesus’ ability to have died willingly on the cross has given you the ability to die

willingly to sin. His ability to conquer death by the power of His resurrection gives you the

ability to be raised up to live in the power of His righteousness. The key is in whose ability you

operate. Your responsibility may be better stated as your response-to-His-ability. Live your days

resting in the awareness of His absolute power, and your failures will be few. Live trusting in

your strength and merits and your mistakes will be many. God has promised you all the power

you need to be all-victorious. That promise is golden. Claim it and apply it!

Prayer : What an amazing promise, Father, that the strength of sin has been rendered powerless,

and that the living righteousness of Christ in me is rendered all-powerful. Connect my heart and

mind entirely with this blessed assurance today and every day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

God’s viewpoint

Judges 6

J udges 6 is one of those chapters that is rich with the interactions that take place between God

and man. This text gives us many angles to develop when preparing a lesson for Sunday school

or a sermon, but we will just look at one today.

The angel that was sent by God addressed Gideon by saying “The Lord is with thee, thou mighty

man of valour”. What did God see that we don’t, at least initially? In verse 23 the Lord tells him

to not fear, you won’t die. Yet Gideon in the cover of darkness because of fear of his father’s

house and the men of the city went to tear down the grove and the altar of Baal that was in it.

In the final verses of this chapter we read the famous fleece test. Today we still use the saying

“put our fleece before the Lord” when we desire God’s direction in some decision. Gideon had

to do this twice to ensure himself that God was with him. Where is this mighty man of valour

that is instructed to be fearless? Reading on into chapter seven God trims his army from 32,000

to 10,000 then again to 300. Still fearful God tells him to go down to the Midianite camp and

hear what they say. Finally, after hearing the dream and the interpretation he has the

confidence and faith that God has given them the victory. He worships God and tells his army of

300 “let’s go”.

The victory is now recorded history for us to read. In the early part of chapter six, we find the

Israelites fearfully living in caves, and Gideon, who had a desire for God’s deliverance, with an “I

can’t do anything I’m to insignificant attitude”. Again, where is the valour that God saw? I don’t

think it’s in the eventual victory that God gave, but it is tied to Gideon’s response to God’s

leading. In spite of the fear of his own countrymen and the enemy, he kept following after God.

Overcoming his feeling of inadequacy and being challenged by God to trust him and not his

army size, Gideon stayed the course. The valour is in keeping the faith and staying the course.

“Let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with

patience the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

In Romans 8:35-37 the question is asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” It

then lists several things that we may face (and Gideon did face) - tribulation, distress,

persecution… The answer is given then with a resounding Nay but in all these things we are

more than conquerors through him. Just as with Gideon, God gives us the victory. Our valour is

in overcoming our fears and inabilities and trusting him to carry us through. What God saw in

Gideon is what God sees in us, individuals who will keep the faith and stay the course, making

Gideon a mighty man of valour and us more than conquerors.

Breaking the Cycle

Judges 3

The third chapter in Judges offers us a look at the sin cycle that plagues many individuals and

entire nations. Fortunately, during this historical era, God graciously provided the nation of Israel

with Judges to lead them out of their sin and back into a right relationship with God. And,

fortunately during our day, God has provided the counsel of His Spirit to bring conviction to the

hearts of men to turn away from following the ways of sin and its ensuing bondage and rather

toward the ways of righteousness and its resulting liberty. God means to demonstrate His

miraculous power to not only save but to sanctify and sustain. Like in the era of Judges, God

would have us cry out, recognizing that our help comes from the LORD alone. Rather than

sending Judges, He has now sent Jesus to be our final Deliverer. While some people may choose

to remain in bondage, He wants His children to realize they can live free from powerful cycle of

sin and its subsequent guilt and shame. and Unless he has been regenerated by the Lord of

heaven, man’s cravings are naturally turned toward all that is in the world. Once he is redeemed

and tastes of the pleasures of heaven, he will lose his yearning for the things his flesh desires.

The follower of Christ will have eyes only for Jesus and no other lover. This is not to say that he

cannot have eyes for another, but, if in right relationship with Him, he will not. Pride can

intercept a Christ-centered love and create a breach in our relationship if we fail to maintain a

close union with Him. We can quench and even grieve the Holy Spirit of Christ by inordinate

affections and attachments to this world and its enticement of false loves. We will, however,

experience joy and contentment when we are in the arms of our true Lover. Our real Soulmate

will never be found in the world. It is an empty and vain pursuit to seek for a true love there.

“Delight thyself also in the LORD: and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart” (Ps. 37:4).

Challenge : Do you long for the things that the Father has chosen for you, or do you often set out

on your course to find pleasure in the things of the world? You have found the Lord’s provision

and gifts to bring real fulfillment. Have you ever found the world’s allurements to bring lasting

satisfaction? Then don’t run after them. They are as elusive as the wind. “Fret not thyself in

anywise to do evil. For evil doers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall

inherit the earth” (Ps. 37:8b-9). Seek for your heart’s truest delight in the lasting pleasure of

heaven’s greatest treasure, Jesus Christ, and His love.

Prayer : Worthy Father, refine my affections until every sense and sentiment becomes attuned to

the joy of living in harmony with Thy Word and will. May I quickly turn away from worldly

distractions and devote myself entirely to heavenly attractions. I know in this only will I find my

divine calling, purpose, and peace. In the powerful name of the one who has broken cycle of sin,

Jesus the Deliverer, I pray it. Amen.

God asks your presence

Joshua 5:10-15 & 6

Before God sends us to a holy charge, He first calls us to holy ground. And, let’s be clear, while the holy charge is always a thing impossible to do with human perspective and strength, it is a thing altogether possible with God’s perspective and strength. He may indeed call us to something as colossal as felling and marching into a giant walled city, as the Israelites were commissioned to do with Jericho. More often, however, He calls us to do what we deem routine or mundane and therefore easily miss. Things like building strong Christ-centered relationships in our marriage, family, church or community. Things like standing for righteousness when all around us people are falling for sin. Like Joshua, we already know that the only way up into the power of God is to go prostrate before the presence of God. If we are not engaged in communion with God, we will soon be engaged in corruption with sin. The worshipful fellowship of Christ is always the way forward in our daily preparation for the holy charge we have been given. He will show us that He is with us and for us in the charge, but typically not before we spend time with Him. Entering a state of willful worship before Him allows us to hear Him speak freely His words of comfort, correction, guidance and encouragement. Whatever we are called to undertake in the name of Christ and for His glory, may it be said of us as it was said of Joshua at the end of chapter 6, “So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.”

There is no charge too small or great to go unattended by God’s power and direction. And, no matter the odds we face, God can more than even the odds. “He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” (Eph. 3:20).

Challenge : As you consider God’s charge for you today, whether monumental or mundane, take a moment just now to go into the presence of God and hear from Him. Ponder especially the words from Psalm 37. Here’s just a taste, “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass. And He shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday” (vss. 3-6). No matter what wickedness surrounds you or what challenges precede you, God’s grace and power can help you face anything! Trust Him and watch Him show up to demonstrate that unlike man’s, His Word and power never fails!

Prayer : All-righteous Father, I commit my ways to You and trust You to bring to pass what I could never do in my own strength. I worship You and praise You for your infinite faithfulness. Be magnified in the work You send me to this day. For Christ’s glory, I ask it. Amen.

A Changing of The Guard

Deuteronomy 34

In these few short verses, we read of Moses’ passing and the beginning of Joshua’s leadership. In a quick review of his life we often split it in thirds. 40 years in Pharaohs house, 40 years in Jethro’s house, and 40 years in the wilderness leading the Israelites to the Promised Land. He spent the last third journeying toward the land he would never step foot in and only seeing it from a mountain top on the east side of the Jordan River. In human terms it can seem sad and even unfair that this great leader who lead millions and at times interceded with God on their behalf to preserve them would die alone without so much as a stone to mark his grave.

We have the opportunity through the word to view Moses as God saw him. He didn’t die a beleaguered old man worn out and tired from the 120 years that offered many hard challenges. His natural force was not abated and his eyes were not dim. He was still in his prime for God was with him, the almighty creator God that knew him face to face. No other man can say that. His face radiated from that experience so much that they put a veil on him so others could look at him. In Jude verse 9 we read that Satan disputed with Michael over Moses’ body, apparently losing because Moses met with Christ on the mount of transfiguration. Finally, in Hebrews 3:5 we read that Moses was verily faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after. Moses fulfilled what God had for him to do, then Joshua fulfilled what God had for him. Both leading Gods people, both doing God’s will, but with two different objectives. Moses took a group of slaves, gave them the law, and in one generation transformed them into a nation who could govern themselves. Joshua took that nation and conquered the Canaanite world. We humans see a life starting in a basket and ending alone on a mountain. God sees Moses in eternity and a continual chain of mankind starting in a garden and ending in a new heaven.

As we experience our lives on earth, we see many changes of the guard. Generations come and go; presidents get elected and go out of office. Leaders in churches, businesses, and organizations serve and retire. With each change we see differences in styles and approaches as individuals fulfill their God given appointments. But God is always on the throne and His will is ultimately being accomplished. We all have the opportunity, by the grace of God, to overcome our handicaps (Moses’ speech); our fears (Moses ‘fear of punishment for the Egyptian he murdered); rejection (Pharaoh kept hardening his heart); resistance (people kept wanting to go back); and disappointment (the people made a golden calf) - and still run the race that is set before us. In doing so we, like Moses, will have our place in God’s kingdom and become links in God’s whole plan for mankind.

May it be said of each of us that we have the testimony of being faithful in our house, as a God’s servant.

Faith vs. Fear

Deuteronomy 31

When we face big fears, God knows we need big faith. But we can rest assured that He never

sends His children into duty without assisting in the details. Moses learned that truth and readily

communicated it to Joshua as he was about to face the daunting task of leading God’s people to

encounter countless dangers and hostile forces in their pursuit of the Promised Land. This

mission was much bigger than Joshua, but not bigger than his God. It was important to go into

this unknown territory thinking on what was known, God’s declared promises that were meant to

be fully known and fully believed. That was the caveat. For only bold belief begets bold

obedience. This was the ultimate requirement for the Israelites in securing their inheritance. Read

slowly the powerful words given to Joshua. Imagine yourself as Joshua and given this mission to

lead or as one of the Israelites in the camp anticipating what was to come. “And the LORD shall

give them up before your face…Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them:

for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake

thee…for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their

fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit. And the LORD, He it is that doth go

before thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed” (vss. 5-8).

Take time to read over these few verses again, meditatively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak

something strikingly personal.

Challenge : As you trek toward the promised land called Heaven, is there some fear that needs

replaced by faith? God’s faithful promises to accompany us and equip us in the journey can be

fully embraced with unrelenting confidence. He is as trustworthy today as He was in Joshua’s

day. He who has called us to the journey, will most assuredly keep us in the journey. Remember,

“Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies” (Psalm

60:12). Take adequate time to contemplate the encouragement God has spoke to you today.

Don’t hurry away too quickly. Your world is undoubtedly full of noise and busyness.

Distraction is the Devil’s delight. Imagine yourself crawling up onto the lap of your gentle

faithful Father, resting, listening to and trusting in His sweet promises. That is His greatest

delight. Let it be yours as well.

Prayer : Holy faithful Father, forgive my lack of faith for I know there is no promise You won’t

keep. No strength you won’t provide. No problem You can’t solve. No enemy You can’t

conquer. No wall You can’t take down. No fear You can’t erase. You are my sufficiency for

every need. Lead me courageously and safely to the Land promised to Your children, for Christ’s

glory. Amen.

Unbridled Love

Deuteronomy 6

As we mine for golden verses in this chapter of Deuteronomy, verse 5 is one worth hiding in the treasure chest of your heart to draw out often as heavenly currency in the transactions of zealous living. It reads, “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” There is a love that comes with reservation and conditions; and, there is love that comes unrestrained and absolute. Our love for God is to be a complete love to the exclusion of anything that would hinder the flow of our affection toward Him. So devoted is this love that it includes every aspect of who we are in body, mind, and soul. It is the giving over of ourselves to a God who gave us everything we have through the Best that He had. The Gospel of John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son…” If a gospel was written about our life, would it read, “For we so loved God, that we gave ourselves to His only begotten Son”? We must ask ourselves if we love God enough to worship and adore Him. Better yet, do we love Him enough to obey Him? Like Abraham of old, if we love God enough, we will believe Him. If we believe God enough, we will obey Him. We cannot love God completely, unless we believe Him wholly, and we cannot believe Him wholly unless we love Him entirely. Love and belief are inseparable. They are mutually dependent upon our understanding of who God is and that He is. Such an understanding is made possible by the revelation of God’s Spirit as we humbly and earnestly approach meditation upon God’s Word.

Challenge: Do you find God irresistible? Are you willing to abandon everything else, for the sake of your love and commitment to Christ? Perhaps you need to immerse yourself in the Word and get to know Him better; for, when you know Him as He is, you will love Him for who He is and for what He isn’t. He is everything good. “There is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts (bribes)” (2 Chr. 19:7). You can count on Him being faithful and just in all His ways. Will you endeavor to be the same in all of yours?

Prayer: Lord, help me to faithfully love and reverence Thee with a perfect heart (2 Chr. 19:9). Ignite my passion for holy obedience out of that loving reverence. Then fan the flames of my love and desire to serve Thee until I know only unreserved dedication. In Christ, I ask it. Amen.

Mountain Top

God said you have been on the “mountaintop” long enough.

Deuteronomy 1-2

If God allowed us to live on the “mountaintop” forever, we would not experience trials, but neither would we achieve any victories. God showed His people when it was time to move visually as they wondered for 40 years in the wilderness. Through all kinds of experiences God tested His people to ready them for their last move toward the Promised Land. “Long enough,” God said, as He was ready to demonstrate His power to the Israelites so that they would trust Him in this conquest. God was ready to lead them to their possession and what they had anticipated for the duration this difficult journey. This great land sounded so good to them until they realized that with the gift came battles against giants and fortified cities! Perhaps they assumed God was going to obliterate the inhabitants of the land before they would come to enter. Ideally for them, God would have already done the work so they could just show up to inhabit all they desired.

They had forgotten that God promised He would be present to bring down the walls of cities, give them strategies to defeat their enemies, and empower them to fight. He promised they would have a divine advantage over anyone they fought, but they would still have to fight. Still their faith wavered, even though God promised to go before them and fight for them lacking nothing, as He had proven so many times before (1:30).

Today God still puts fear in man that causes us to move and tremble at His presence if we choose not to obey and reverence His name (2:25). If even today our accomplishments and successes came solely by our own hand or without effort, wouldn’t we be quick to overlook and forget the God who is truly our victor? Today, God is calling soldiers to come down off the mountain. He is faithful and we have experienced His strength so we can walk toward what He is calling us to do. Remembering He promises that He will go before us, walk with us and be in us to see us through. Understanding that victory is only going to come if we are relying on His strength and not our own. He gives us the free gift of His salvation and then tells us to “work out” our salvation in fear and trembling (Phil 2:12b). Are we discouraged because the Christian life is more difficult and challenging than you expected to experience? Don’t be. God’s gifts to you are perfect, because through them, God makes you perfect as well (Mt 5:48; Js 1:17). May we all be satisfied in knowing that having God in us is enough for success and the experiences He brings us through will put us back on the mountaintop.

There are two incidences recorded where the people contended with Moses over the lack of water, the first in Ex. 17, forty years separate the two. In Ex. 17 Moses was told to strike the rock, but this time God tells him to speak to the rock. In verse 12 we see that speaking to the rock in front of the people would sanctify God in their eyes. Sanctify can be interpreted as hallowed or elevated. God wanted the people to understand that he could and would provide all they needed and more. They could have complete trust in him. They would need to trust him as they would shortly enter the Promised Land. In Psalm 78:15-16 Asaph records that the waters ran down like rivers. This would amply supply water to all the people, well over a million, and their herds. In Isaiah 43 God is declaring that he is the Lord and in verses 18-21 calls for a remembrance of this event saying again that he has and will provide waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert and as a result the animals would honor him and his chosen people would show forth his praise.

To summarize, God is saying

1. I supply all your needs.

2. I can and will do it amply.

3. I will glorify myself in this and desire you glorify me also.

In John 4 Jesus tells the woman at the well that he can give her living water, in fact it will be a well springing up into eternal life. This well is so bountiful she will never thirst again. He goes on to tell her now is the time that true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth and the Father seeks such to worship him.

Jesus was the Rock that the water flowed from in the wilderness, 1 Cor.10:4 and Jesus is the living water that brings us salvation and eternal life. We are his chosen people who worship him by loving each other, serving others, seeking out the lost, singing praise and many other acts. I wonder if worship and praise was a virus would I be infecting all those I come in contact with. Physical distancing and mask wearing is appropriate for COVID19, but not for praising God.

Sometimes it’s okay to fall

Numbers 16

Moses had just been confronted by Korah and an associate band of rebels. These Levites sought to usurp Moses’ God-given authority over the Israelites, to gain some added benefit for themselves. Moses perceived that their motivation was impure and self-serving, and that God’s anger would be kindled against this ungodly group think. In verse 4, we can see Moses’ immediate response, when “…he fell upon his face.” Perhaps it was part anger, part angst, part grievance, part petition, but it was no doubt also part meekness from this chosen man of God. This was not the first time we read of Moses on his face before the LORD, nor would it be his last (Num. 14:5; 16:4, 22; 20:6). It was an obvious admission of need and a valuable default position he assumed when problems overwhelmed him and threatened to undo him. He made the right choice as he acknowledged God’s sovereignty over all things, in all times and places. He knew, like we know, that God is greater than any existential threat man may face. He was, like we can be, confident that in the bigness of any difficulty, God is bigger still. Like Moses, we can trust God to oversee and overcome the trials that seek to overwhelm or undo us.

Challenge : What about you? Got any problems that seem too big to handle? Somehow, I believe you do. And, that leaves you in a very good place because God loves to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are earnestly turned toward Him (2 Chron. 16:9). He did it repeatedly for Moses and He will do the same for you. The answer is just a fall away. Fall down before Him and call out to Him. He’s waiting to hear from you and test your willingness to prostrate yourself in His presence. Remember, in His presence there is fullness of joy (Ps. 16:11) and that joy will become the very strength you are looking for to surmount this or any life challenge you may face (Neh. 8:10). You can embrace earth’s difficult trials inasmuch as you embrace God’s divine truths. God, His Word and the joy of His grace in you are a formidable and unconquerable force against any evil that will ever present itself. Go in the confidence of God’s benevolence and His power. And as you go, Godspeed, fellow saints!

Prayer : Sovereign Lord, when evil presses against me, whether in my health, in my family, in my church, in my work or in my nation, help me to fall before you so that I might rise with You in joyful victory. What an appropriate reminder on this National Day of Prayer, that our strength comes from You alone. Grant me a heart of meekness that always acknowledges, embraces and prayerfully lives out that truth for the glory of Jesus’ matchless name, now and forever. Amen.

In the first two verses, we see two points of contention between these siblings. Moses’ wife, probably Zipporah, is Ethiopian thus not an Israelite and Moses the younger brother has preeminence in leadership. This contention becomes so strong that God directly confronts the three of them publicly. God doesn’t even address the issue of Zipporah. Long before Moses, Judah had fathered twin sons with his Canaanite daughter-in-law, Tamar; and Joseph married an Egyptian woman, daughter of a pagan priest. God had accepted them and their offspring and would again in the future with Rehab from Jericho and Ruth from Moab - Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth all being ancestors to Christ.

God went directly to Moses’ leadership calling Moses his servant who is faithful in all his house or all that God had called him to do. He elevated Moses by telling them that he communicates with Moses “mouth to mouth”; or that is He speaks to Moses directly. Miriam is apparently the driver in these conflicts and she suffers the consequences.

Two pieces of scripture that immediately come to mind are James 2 and Romans 14. In James 2 we are reminded that God is not a respecter of persons and neither should we. All the things that separate us as humans in this world, race, social status, religious background, political preference, and so on, are null and void at the foot of the cross. “We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). We are all equals in our lost state, and we are all equals in our saved state. In Romans, Paul shares that within the church we have a wide range of convictions, and that this is ok, and we should respect those convictions. In verse 4 of Romans 14, we understand that we are all servants of God and He will cause (or help) each of us to stand before Him in those differing convictions.

As we start to move toward opening up our nation and our states, we will, praise the Lord, again start to assemble as a church. It is likely that we will have differing opinions on how that should look and how fast we should move to a new normal of corporate worship. Through this time God is giving us the opportunity to exercise ourselves in His scriptural principles. Love for one another, esteeming our brother higher than ourselves, and following our authorities whether they be national, state or church authority are just a few examples.

Bluffton North leadership will be using the safety of a multitude of counselors (Prov 11:14) as BN leadership confers with the Trustees, Ushers, First Aid committee, SS Supt, and others for input into this process. We will be using AC Elder Body recommendations as well as following our state guidelines. We appreciate your prayers, trust, patience, and input as we develop a plan for re-gathering. We are God’s children and his grace is more than sufficient, let’s all glorify God as we “love as Jesus loves”.

Leviticus 26

Conditional Blessings

Verse 3 starts with the big word “If”. If you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, followed by the first word in verse 4 “Then”. These two words constitute a condition for the following blessing.

1. God promises to bless their crops thus providing all their needs. The yield from the crops will give them and their flocks plenty to eat. The flocks and herds will provide clothing and shelter from wool and the leather to make tents.

2. God also will give them peace and safety from both beast and enemies. This is freedom from fear. Knowing that God has kept life threatening enemies at bay brings emotional security as well as physical.

3. God will prosper them as a nation. Making them fruitful and multiplying them is the promise of a growing nation. His promise to establish his covenant refers back to the covenant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Bless those that bless you, curse those that curse you, make you like the stars in the heavens, innumerable.

4. Most important God will be with them. He will set his tabernacle among them and walk among them

To give credibility to his promises, as if God needs to, he reminds them of what he has already done in bringing them out of Egypt.

Unconditional Love

It may seem wrong to consider all the punishments for disobedience unconditional love, but let’s follow through with God’s goal. We’re not going to go through all the punishments like we did the blessings. However, take note of the stages. These stages each begin with”If ye will not” they are in verse 14, 18, 23, and 27. They are followed with God saying I will do thus and so. Take notice that each round of punishments get more severe. God through this is trying to get their attention for a reason. He loves them so unconditionally that regardless of their sin which separates them from him he wants them back. The final big “IF” if they confess their iniquity, humble their hearts and accept their punishments he will remember his covenants. In re-establishing his covenants with them they will again be in communion with him and realize all the blessings of having him among them.

As we consider that God is consistent in all his dealings with mankind, where do we put ourselves in this equation? How many times have we strayed from God enough to experience a loss of peace? And when we seek God out in prayer asking for forgiveness, how many times has he quickly forgiven and draws us close to him? Did he not establish his credibility on the cross with his arms open wide?

The Day of Atonement

Leviticus 16

Lev 16:30 - For on this day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. (NKJV)

God in His holiness was continually distanced from His people. Their natural tendency to fall into the worship of unknown gods, and constant complaining caused this separation and distance. God being just, but yet full of mercy, had to set laws in place so He would not consume them with judgment. Moses was the messenger through whom God would deliver instructions back to the priests and elders to assist in the carrying out of His Law. To satisfy the atonement of the people, these statutes would have to be carried out through sacrifice, death and sanctity of blood. Aaron could feel the life pass out of the sacrifice that would substitute its life for their iniquity. Cleansing himself first through specific procedures, Aaron was able to approach God beyond the veil. He alone entered the Holy Sanctuary, seeking atonement for their sins. Approaching God’s glory, crying out before Him, laying all their transgressions on the alter. Praise God…forgiveness was offered yet one more time.

Jn 14:6 Jesus said to him, I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through Me.

Jesus is now our high priest, the Bread of Life, the Good Shepherd, the True Vine, the Light of the World, the Door, the Way, the Truth, the Life, and the Resurrection. Though our sinful nature still distances us from God (Rm 3:23), Christ intercedes for us, taking all our transgressions upon Himself. Offering for us the supreme sacrifice that makes our scarlet sin white as snow before the Father (Is 1:18). Seeking Christ’s forgiveness that we might live a life that does justly, loves mercy and walks humbly with God (Micah 6:8). Approaching God through prayer, as the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (Rm 8:26). Praise God…forgiveness is offered yet one more day.

Are we engaged in a life of love that expresses Jesus to the world around us? Do we find ourselves approaching the altar daily, seeking forgiveness, that we might be sanctified? Is our life an offering, a praise to God for the mercies He still offers today?

Keeping the Charge of the Lord

Leviticus 8

Moses is carrying out the instructions that he received from God in Exodus 29. In Ex. 29:1 we read “to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest office”. In more common language we would say to dedicate them to serve me (God). Remember we, being truly converted Christians; all have a royal priesthood (1 Pet. 1:9). Our first duty is to serve God.

First - Aaron and his sons were washed and then clothed. I’m sure this washing was symbolic much like our baptisms today are an outward display of what Christ has done in our hearts. In Titus 3:5 the washing of regeneration and renewing comes from the Holy Spirit.

Second - the sacrifices were to make reconciliation or atonement for sin. We have the blood of Christ to do that for us. These sacrifices also were for the dedication of the priest for service. Interestingly Moses places blood on their right ear, thumb, and toe.

The Ear

To be fully committed we must always be ready to hear God’s word. This comes to us through different facets.

- From reading God’s word, so then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17).

- From the Holy Spirit, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance , whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).

- From each other, He gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelist, and some pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ (Eph. 4:11-12)

The Thumb

We must be ready to do the work of the Lord.

- We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Eph. 2:10)

- Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven (Matt. 5:16)

The Toe

We need to be ready to go for the Gospels sake.

Go- ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost (Matt. 28:19)

- While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, behold three men seek thee. Arise therefore and go with them, doubting nothing, for I have sent them. (Acts 10:19-20)

- Finally, in Lev. 8:35 we see that they were to abide at the door of the tabernacle seven days and nights and keep the charge of the Lord. In 2 Peter 1:10 we are to give diligence to make our calling and election sure and in Hebrews 10:23 we are taught to hold fast the profession of our faith.

To summarize, in holding fast to our faith in God and diligently seeking his calling in us we will keep the charge he has given us to hear, do and go as he

beckons us to his service and his glory.

A Time of Purification

Have you ever found yourself in a time of waiting? Maybe it is waiting to get your driver’s license. Waiting to get out of school. Waiting for your wedding day to arrive. Perhaps you’re waiting on a job offer to arrive, or a difficult storm in your life to pass. If you’re like a majority of people these days, you are waiting intently for the coronavirus pandemic to end, and for life to get back to normal. Whatever you are waiting on, just know that you’re not alone in waiting.

Many times, throughout the Bible, God used a waiting period to help test, refine and purify His people. Proverbs 17:3 says, “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.” The number 40 is one of the most commonly used numbers in the Bible, especially as it relates to waiting periods. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, we see the number 40 used in waiting, testing or trying periods for God’s people.

We see the number 40 show up frequently in the life of Moses, including his time spent with God up on Mount Sinai when Moses was permitted to see God as He passed by the cleft of the rock. Moses also received the Ten Commandments a second time during his 40 days on Mount Sinai. “And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat break nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments” (Exodus 34:28).

Why did God spend 40 days with Moses on Mount Sinai? Perhaps God waited 40 days before sending Moses back down to the people as a means of allowing the children of Israel to experience a form of purification in their hearts following their sinful deeds of the Golden Calf only a month before. Other occurrences in the Bible where God used the number 40 include:

• The Flood where it rained for 40 days and 40 nights.

• Moses spent 40 years learning who God was in Midian while tending sheep.

• The Israelite spies spent 40 days spying out the promised land.

• Israel was forced to serve the Philistines for 40 years before Samson delivered them.

• Elijah traveled for 40 days and 40 nights to Mt. Horeb after fleeing from Queen Jezebel.

• Jesus fasted and was tempted in the desert for 40 days.

• Jesus’ ascension occurred 40 days after the resurrection.

Why God used the number 40 throughout the Old and New Testament is a mystery – perhaps one we will come to understand in Heaven someday. Until that time, we can be confident that whatever trials or time of purification comes our way is being done as a means for making us stronger believers and drawing us closer to the Father. “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7).

So, whether you’re waiting for that next big step in life, a storm of testing to pass, or for the coronavirus to be gone, just know that God sees you and He loves you. And He wants to continue to refine and purify us so that they will be found worthy when His beloved Son returns.
